VALUES Communication

VALUES Communication is a program that is designed to improve ethical communication. It uses the communication process that is described in James Young’s book Communicating With VALUES, A Seamless Process to Improve Personal and Organizational Effectiveness.

The program teaches a six step communication  model that uses the work “values” as an acronym: Value, Ask, Listen, Understand, Empower, Serve

Valuing - Communication comes from who we are and our perceptions. It has to start with valuing ourselves and those to whom we are communicating. Without trust, effective communication is impossible. Asking questions is the heart of the VALUES Communication process. Only by asking questions can we better understand. Through understanding our communication becomes meaningful. If asking questions is the heart of communication, listening is the soul. Unfortunately, we develop many bad habits in our lives that often affect how well we listen. Listening skills can be improved. VALUES Communication helps people become better listeners.

Stephen R. Covey says that we should first seek to understand then to be understood. Not understanding others, their personality style, generational differences, others perspective can be a serious hindrance to effective communication.  Empowering is a key component to effective communication. As we empower others, it allows us to expand our capabilities and meet our potential. Serving is a critical part of being a good leader. Developing a servant's heart creates loyalty and trust in those you lead.

VALUES Communication is truly a program that can enhance the culture in an organization. It is designed for all people from leaders to staff and line workers.
